Top 10 Remixes Of 2008!

[Intro Goes Here + Bla Bla Bla & More Bla Bla]... Now Without Further Ado, I Present You My Personal Top 10 Remixes Of 2008. All Disagreements Are Welcomed; Don't Hesitate To Share Your Thoughts On What's Hawt & What's Nawt Off The List. Let's Get Rollin'.

#10 Digitalism - Echoes (Siriusmo Remix)
I don't think we've witnessed many 'Simple Yet Effective' edits this year, as far as I can remember the only one that comes to my mind is the Lifelike of Van She's Kelly from last month, which suffered from hatred for not being an obvious remix, although i do admit Lifelike took the term 'Simple' a bit wee too far with it; on the other hand the Siriusmo [Remix] 'Simple Yet Effective' edit towel dried the sweaty original, drowned it in a swamp of liquid green cotton candy & performed exorcism on it to get the digital robot ghost out of it & prepare it to softly voyager Daft Punk (when being smooth) style.

Have you scientifically witnessed the genetic birth of the milky way?

#9 M83 - Kim & Jessie (Montag Remix)
If there's any name that would make sense next to M83 then it definitely is Montag & this remix further more proves the success of this combination. If the church of Sci-Fi virgins existed then you'd likely hear this gospel on a Sunday played by a full orchestra that goes by the name 'The Cosmics'; that is if this is your thing.

A silky ballad laminated by Montag with additional layers of synth, ambient, star exfoliation, sparkles & delicate melodies from galaxies far away.

Lots of people still think M83 is a band, probably because of the fitting-to-the-music-style cherubic teens portrait on the cover of the latest album; Truth is, M83 is just one guy.

#8 Studio - West Side (Klumpfisk Remix)
Here's a bit of a surprise, a remix by a Swedish nobody-to-bloggers making its way into the top 10 remixes list when believe it or not this is his first remix he ever made!

All i can say is, hold your breathe until the 3:23 mark because few seconds from there you'll be experiencing an orgasmic head rush where possibly the greatest breakdown in a remix this year lies within. Never in my life, I ever thought once that a Studio track could be DJ'd on a wild weekend night... let alone be danced to like its the #1 hit on the dance charts....It makes Mr. President's Coco Jumbo sound like a lullaby - can't believe it's unofficial

#7 Friendly Fires - Paris (ft. Au Revoir Simone) (Aeroplane Remix)
It is safe to say that Aeroplane are the big remixing surprise of 2008, the blogs' fondness initiated near the beginning of the year & slowly turned into an obsession as the months progressed, guaranteeing the duo a spot on the Hypem popular list for every remix dropped into the blog ring.

Turning electro & indie tunes to lux cloudy disco anthems is their signature sound & what were rejected remixes of Cut Copy/Grace Jones eventually demanded for a commercial release after the masses repeated the question "What the hell is wrong with the label?"; The magic peaked in my vision when they bravely erased out the original Friendly Fires vocals & replaced them with the healing glycerin like vocals of NYC chanteuses Au Revoir Simone that not only renewed my love for the track but made it a necessity for the original album version to be re-released with the new vocals as a stand alone production... unfortunately that doesn't happen often in this copyright & cash driven life.

This remix puts the original to shame.

#6 Goldfrapp - A&E (Gui Boratto Remix)/Hercules & Love Affair - Blind (Frankie Knuckles Remix)
Two bookmark songs that will for years ahead resurrect (probably nostalgic) feelings & memories from 08, both conveniently addressing human intimacy; the folk former projects it through reality & the disco house latter underhandedly celebrates hedonistic pleasures - In a way the combination cries out "I'm a damaged animal & I want to be loved".

While both are bulked with volume on the remix, Gui Borrato ascends the grim dimension of the original to the surface with a doomed nuclear reactor like helicopter distorted bass that alongside Alison Goldfrapp's vocals gives me flashes of the most beautiful airbrushed apocalypse scenes.

On the contrary Blind got tailored by Frankie Knuckles in a fashionable house manner to enhance it for a lounging experience by smoothing out the sharp peaks & shattered beats of the original & emphasizes on piano pieces, midi tongue lashes & breeze carrying steady beats making it the suitable soundtrack for my every sunny Friday brunch.

#5 Mystery Jets - Two Doors Down (Duke Dumont Reconstruction)
If only I can direct every thriller scenario i envisioned in my head while listening to this in the dark, i would've won tons of awards by now. Dark, ominous & vague are three accurate words to describe this reconstruction - you know how in some horror/thriller independent art movies about schizophrenic people committing crimes against their loved ones, not realizing its actually themselves doing it & the whole time nothing makes sense until the ending comes, and reveals what really happened in intense disturbing slow motion artistic flashes; accompanied by weird fitting piece of music where you see the murderer unconsciously preparing for his crime, committing it, getting rid of the evidence so his other personality wouldn't find out & then eventually the best bit of the movie arrives where that person realizes what happened & it all gets amazingly too much & for a few seconds there you'd put yourself in that person's shoes & realize how scary & confusing it is.

This is what the last scene & post realization few seconds sound like.

http://i38.tinypic.com/xomvqt.jpg
#4 MGMT - Kids (Soulwax Remix)/MGMT - Electric Feel (Justice Remix)
I don't even want to go there.

I think every single person on this planet that knows what Hypem is have already downloaded these 2; they both made it into every single blog i know good or bad (except for a few that avoided posting them for all the right reasons). It still gives me a headache thinking of the process it took to finally have them in real 320kbps. It was hell but I admit, in the end it was all worth it.

Aggressive heavy machinery monsters.

http://i34.tinypic.com/4gi3nq.jpg
#3 The Whitest Boy Alive - Golden Cage (Fred Falke Remix)
Where do i start, where do i start.. The Whitest Boy Alive are my glass of warm milk, jasmine soap bar, log of white chocolate, shards of egg shells, clouds of coconut powder & tight hugging white briefs; It's all about the essence rather than the color. Erlend Oye is my diluted music version of Andy Warhol & his deep pop & voice makes me wanna cry my eyes out sometimes. In this remix Fred Falke took his rainbow chapstic and rubbed its creamy trance balm head all over the secret warehouse studio product to turn it into an epic anthem with foamy baselines & heart melting vocoded ricochets.

Fred Falke made some horrendous credibility shaking decisions this year when he obviously for the paycheck remixed some seriously underwhelming tracks, but knowing that he gave us this gem makes it all easy to forget and forgive. I have nothing but amazing memories to go with it, every time time i hear it I fall in love with myself more & more & there's absolutely nothing wrong about it.

http://i33.tinypic.com/4uc2nn.jpg
#2 The B-52's - Funplex (Scissor Sisters Witches At The Wet Seal Instrumental)
On a Blogger scale, Erol Alkan (Mustapha 3000/Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve) is my Frank Sinatra in legend density & gets me weak in the knees like a Beatles fan who just discovered an unreleased album at a used records store (whenever a [remix] rework surface). - Just like DFA (Tim Goldsworthy) likes his remixes to be rich and extensive, Alkan's reworks averagely hit the 8 minutes mark and showcases a flawless work only can be done with hands of a brain surgeon. It's not remixes as much as atmospheric higher budget remakes of what is already a good tune & succeeded in bring formulated into a further more substantial piece of art that simulates a movie score adapted by the shapes of the original. Always magnificent never average to say the least.

Ohh! Crapp... wait... this is a Scissor Sisters rework!? (PUN INTENDED)

http://i38.tinypic.com/33u6ddk.jpg
#1 Dragonette - I Get Around (Ratcliffe Remix)
1) To be honest I never was that crazy about Dragonette, sure i love a few of their songs, the remix packages were always tasteful & packed with quality remixes but in general, as a band (for some reason) they never hacked their way into my system.
2) I have no idea who the hell is Ratcliffe!

You may ask "why would you rank it as #1 when you're not that into the band or the remixer?"

The answer is very simple, this is by far the best remix of the year because it stands for everything that lured (saved) me from the ugly paws of mainstream & delivered me into the of electro in the first place when i used to call it "Arcade Music", It's the Blip, Beep, Bleep, Ping, Pong, Chirp, Clunk, Ding, Dong, Tink, Plink, Plank, Plonk, Twinkle, Tingle, Cling, Clang, Chew, Pew, Brrr, Durrr, Tsssk, Tak, Teet, Tweet & Toot.

A Tom & Jerry brawl in the twilight zone reinterpreted from visual to audio.

This is pure bliss on big speakers.

Ps. 'I Get Around' was released in my region in January 08 - If you think the Dragonette remix is unqualified then the next remix becomes #1 and so on.

now im waiting for the "top 10 original songs of 2008" :P

Tyler said...

Killer list. Really glad to see the West Side remix and the Duke Dumont reconstruction on there; those were two of my favorite tracks this year.

Ronan said...

Great list.
DJ Mehdi - Pocket Piano (Joakim 'Berger' Remix)

Anonymous said...

Great list, Blind has been on my mp3 player constantly for months, the Aeroplane remix of Paris is sublime. Hoping 2009`s offerings will be just as good.

Redmanthinks

Amor said...

맞아 Hercules & Love Affair - Blind (Frankie Knuckles Remix) 정말 최고였다규~~
소울왁스(soulwax)의 믹스(mix)도 좋지 않았어??
mgmt-kids (soulwax remix) 이런거 말이야

Anonymous said...

awesome list! though I feel that the Skyve Reuters Bunkalifony edit is a better version of mgmt's kids than the soulwax remix.

brian savage said...

i'm sure also a lot of people still think m83 is a band is because they were (well more of a group). they were two up until Don't Save Us From The Flames. then again i guess if you knew them then, surely by now you'd realize it's only one guy. montag also did a remix of m83's teen angst back then, which is also fucking amazing.

great list though dookie, think you covered all bases. prince language's remix of electric feel could replace justice's...

Anonymous said...

I believe Ratcliffe is Simon Ratcliffe of the Basement Jaxx.

Greg said...

Yeah. There was a posting on the Jaxx forum about that.

WAY TO STEAL WHAT I WAS GOING TO SAY, GUY.

Anonymous said...

hey there!
thanks for the top10, great tracks...
there is a pet shop boys remix of MGMT's kids, it's on their official page. it so awesome!!! this would definitely hit the top10, too.
cheers,
gallo

kWazt said...

Wicked. Ohh! Yess... I know where I'll be looking for my favorite tracks of 2009 ^^

Designcollector said...

Hi five from Russia. Awesome selection - thank you!

Edward Woodward said...

i think i speak for everyone when i say, i love this list! i thank you endlessly, although i kind of expected some shinichi osawa to be somewhere in there; but i'm not complaining :)

Brad said...

As always, only the best from Faisal.

:P

BLOG LOVE.

DWIGHT said...

your selection is awesome ! you picked the best without the obvious choices (except for the mgmt tracks but you didnt gave them straight ;P)
even if it doesnt include any australian gems (PNAU, Miami Horror, Shazam), or one of the many purely good Breakbot's remix, or a good Lykke Li remix (AutoErotique, Loving Hand, Punks Jump Up, Black Kids or even a new one I found by Suck Shaft) or one of the Dada Life's Guerilla Fart... I would say its a fair portait of the 08 remixed scene ! its just that there's so many good songs that its impossible to put them all into a top ten.. and i have to recognize that building a nice top ten is something only a few people like you can do right!
<3

Phil said...

That Dragonette remix is dripping of Basement Jaxx, so yeah, I do believe that's Simon Ratcliffe of the Basement Jaxx. Very nice.

richi said...

As always mate great post. Have not heard most of these but am loving them all!
Two great things i wanted to compliment you on:

1 - You go to the effort of naming the files how i like them: band then song without spaces. saves me time haha :)

2 - always something interesting to say about the track!

Anonymous said...

this list is awsome! thanks for sharing!

Faisal Jehan said...

[JORG] Yeah I've been told many times that mr M83 has musical super powers live!

[Alex] Hahah I know, after making that list i kept listening to it for 3 days to make sure that i'm convinced with the selections & seems i got my likings all right.. but yeah remixes are confusing bitches what worx for someone doesnt for someone else!

[Tyler] <3

[Ronan] Actually that Joakim remix was supposed to be on the top 10 but i kept moving the entries around that it got kicked out of it haha! Amazing remix ntl.

[Redmanthinks] I guarantee you at least the first 3 months will be amazing, i know a bunch of remixes will come out around then that i can't tell you what they are, but we're pretty covered from jan to march!

[Anonymous] Do you know where i can hear the 'Skyve Reuters Bunkalifony edit '?

[Brian Savage] I'll have to check out that old Montag remix! & I like the prince language remix but the fact that it only exists in a bad webrip turned me off.. I asked prince lang for it many times but never got it.

[Anonymous/Greg/Phil] Yeah it only makes sense that it's him, i mean the music tells it all. No wonder it's amazing!

[Gallo] Will check it out!

[kWazt] haha damn right!

[Designcollector] ^5

[Edward Woodward] You know what, there should've been.. but there have been soo many being released so quickly that i never got a chance to really keep listening to one of them and consider it as the year's favorite, although each and every one of his remixes are an OMG thing in my books.

[Brad] Thanx moron :P blog lawv right back at ya. <3

[DWIGHT] Thanx man! Yeah I had a rough debate with myself about whether i should have the MGMT remixes on it or not & realized i love soulwax/justice/MGMT too much to keep them out, they are actually great remixes & i kept going back them over n over but they are definitely not the #1 remixes, because at this point the soulwax/justin sound is something we accustomed to long time ago. The lack of aust goodies comes from the fact that there are at least 3 remixes of each style that could tie a rank & as good as they are in some cases its just the right combination of home made synth, which dont get me wrong.. it is AMAZING but these 10 remixes are the ones that i consumed the most during this year.

[Richi] i don't mind saying stupid stuff when it actually what i feel about a certain track, it doesn't have to always be professional.. u know? Glad it's working for you :D

Thanx everyone for the feedback! <3

hey awesome list. thank you so much.
really weird that you didn't add shazam.
I'd probably add to this list Grace Jones' William's blood(aeroplane remix) and PNAU as sb already mentioned and some others
really good blog!love it &love u!

Anonymous said...

can i have a link to the justice remix please?

Anonymous said...

no good man..
way too cheesy..
I read your blog often and so I can say I am dissapointed, but not surprised.

heres whats (WAY) better:
moby - i love to move in here (holy ghost! remix)
alter ego - jolly joker (supermayer remix)
thom yorke - the eraser (xxxchange remix)
mia - paper planes (dfa remix)
lcd soundsystem - big ideas (babytalk remix)

whoops..might have just lost a subscriber.

Faisal Jehan said...

^^ that shortlist looks like something pitchfork would go for, I admit some of those are top 10 worthy probably 2 of them but I went for the remixes that i've played the most & enjoyed this year rather than which ones are gargantuan production wise & how deep they are.

Maybe next year i'll do a heavier one, this time i just had fun. ;)

Zeon said...

Some surefire picks there...just one thing though: Au Revoir Simone are not French. They're actually from New York!

Faisal Jehan said...

^^ whoa and all this time i thought... thanx man! Fixed :D

Jeremy said...

so why the scissor sisters rework instrumental instead of just the scissor sisters rework?

digitalclatter said...

man, i really like this blog...a lot... but man, this is list is really bad. there's maybe 1 track on here that's top ten worthy. Justice remix of Electric Feel? wtf? that shit was terrible. and not just because i hate Justice. it was just really bad/boring. i'm really disappointed in this.
thanks for ruining my day, douchebag.

Faisal Jehan said...

[Jeremy] Because the vocals on the remix cover the best bits of the instrumental.

[Digitalclatter] This is not "Ohh!Crapp... Readers' Approved Top 10 Remixes Of 08 List" - I'm very happy with it & wasn't aiming for a heavy list with names like DFA, Jackson, Rasta Wigs, Sly Hats...etc but an honest list of what i played the most during the year whether on my iPod, at parties or even in the car.. this is not a production achievement ceremony.

I understand you hatred for justice.. here are people who hate Bjork but that doesn't mean shes bad.

& you're calling me a douchebag when you're the one coming back here over and over for months now, that kinda makes you the douchebag.

Convince me with reason rather than just say "I know better" because that only makes you an ignorant.

Kevin said...

Faisal; you might be the hardest working blogger out there.. amazing. great list, obviously deeper in the disco and pop than the heavy stuff.. I can't believe I didn't have some of these tracks!

the only glaring exception I can see is a Drop The Lime remix.. granted, not many dudes whamp harder than him, so I can see why he was left off.. but goddamn! dtl KILLED IT this year! no one pushed the scene forward harder and faster than him.. and he deserves recognition for that.

can't wait to keep reading this blog in the new year, thxoxo <3

karin said...

i kind of love you.

digitalclatter said...

douche bag in the figurative sense, not really. i don't REALLY think you're a douchebag. like i said..i love your blog. don't get your panties in wad. and to assume i didn't completely realize it was personalized list is absurd. but, getting all pissy over a readers opinion is kinda childish. and i mean, come on man, making a 'Top 10 List' is a pretty objective stance to take on such a subjective subject... i.e. -MUSIC. and THAT is kind of ignorant. but i see what you're saying, and i even agree. just let my sarcasm be sarcasm. no one really thinks people they don't know are douchebags. keep up the awesome work on your blog, i'll always read it and make fun of you.
;)

Faisal Jehan said...

[Kevin] Thanx A lot for the great words. Believve it or not i haven't heard anything by DTL yet!

[Karin] i kinda do too! lol <3

[digitalclatter] No harm done, I'm just preset to backfire at attacks. Keep pointing out the shitty posts for me. :P

digitalclatter said...

and since you're probably interested, here's my picks, in no particular order:

- Chromeo: Fancy Footwork (Russ Chimes Remix)
- The Young Punx - Fire (electro Rock Remix)-dancefloor killer-
- Hail Social - No Paradise (Adeyhawke Remix)
- Kanye West - Flashing Lights (Diplo Remix)
- Ocelot - This is Our time (Treasure Fingers Remix)
- MSTRKRFT - Bounce (Felix Cartal Remix)
- CSS - Move (Cut Copy Remix)
- Cut Copy - Lights And Music (Moulinex Remix)
- Little Boots - Stuck on Repeat (Fake Blood Remix)
- T.I. - Whatever You Like (DiscoTech Remix)

Faisal Jehan said...

u know what we have drop dead opposite taste coz i wouldn't have considered any of those for top of the year.. but if i had to include Felix Cartal i would've chosen his remix of Dragonette 'take it like a man' & for Diplo i think his remix of Monkey is the best damn thing he's done this year. Cut Copy & Hail social remixes i love, but the rest i don't think i've played them more than few times this year..

if u liked that treasure fingers remix of ocelot then you're gonna lose your mind when you hear the kap10kurt one... IMHO tons better.

Cheers for the list. :D

Anonymous said...

Love the list, but that Aeroplane remix of Friendly Fires needs to be #1. That remix with the found backing vocal from Au Revoir Simone is perfection. Thank you for putting this list together and keep up the blog!!

Anonymous said...

Quit whining people. Taste is subjective. I like your taste. A lot. If you lost a subscriber, so what, in me you've gained one.

Brian said...

It's all about taste right?
I am a fan of the more aggro electro shit, so i would've added stuff like
John Legend feat. Andre 3000 - Green Light (MSTRKRFT remix)
Boys Noize - Oh! (Danger Remix)
Shit Disco - 72 Virgins (The Bloody Beetroots remix)
...things of this nature. And for the record, Justice broke down some serious walls people, give credit where credit is sue.

Brian said...

oh, and the You Love Her Coz She's Dead remix of Womanizer is all types of kick ass... thanks for that one.

Tom said...

Wow, impressive list of solid beats. I am going to have to subscribe.

MeowMix said...

Very well done, I am not finished previewing all of them but I like what I hear so far. I can think of a few tracks that you might have missed. While I am not a fan of T.I "whatever you like"...I truly enjoyed the DiscoTech remix. I thought it was easily in my top ten.

I am going to subscribe to your blog now...

Hey man, nice list. Listened to the Midnight Juggernauts remix of Dragonette's I Get Around? It's true that remixes are the only thing that make Dragonette a worthwhile listen.

James said...

Wow. The Klumpfisk remix of West Side is absolutely brilliant. And it's nice to see Mystery Jets getting some representation. I can't wait to see them on the 4th.
