I always judge an album by it's cover...
maybe because I´m a graphic designer?
:P
I do think album cover have a psychological effect on our reception for the music - sometimes a good album with a horrible cover could become a less than good just because every time i play it i can recall the ugliness in my head.
i firmly believe they complete each other.
hey, i just read this post and i was gonna say the same thing. i do judge an album by its cover - or ep or single or whatever. i think image is incredibly important not only for the band for the album, too. it's a sad thing to say or think for that matter but i on the other hand i don't think labels and promotion companies would spend so much money on promoting an image if it had no effect.. promo is expensive for a reason. we can only get bombarded by advertisement so much and so time literally is money. and i mean, there's always a good side of something. while about 66% of promotion is annoying and rather negative i do enjoy some of it. i like to see a fancy car commercial or some hip tv-ad for this vodka-mix they put out. and so a nice cover art is pretty much the same. the only reason the car ad is fancy and the vodka ad is fancy is because they want it to be. the cover art sets almost the entire theme for the album. best recent example: cut copy. "in ghost colours" graphically expresses "ghost colours". now i could go on about this picture but the point simply is: if justice didn't have a cross on their cover there'd be much much less hype.
^^ anonymous who ever you are:

Tou-Che.. well said my friend!
Hej,
I never judge an album byt its cover, but that's mainly because I always try to have an open mind when it comes to music.. I actually hardly ever look at the covers allthough i'm a graphic designer. but the thing is, I want to be inspired byt the music itself, not the artists or the visual arts. it doesn't always work, but atleast I try...

but don't you think if you were hired to do an album artwork that you would want to deliver what the content of the disco sounds like through the artwork?
